Job Six:
Shag Carpet
Sarah Raza Parvaiz knocked on the door with desperation, he knew perfectly well that the law enforcement was following him, and he knew perfectly well what they wanted him to do, but he did not have the choice in the matter. He was playing into their hands, right into their hands, but it did not really matter now. The goal was in sight, and only victory was next.
The door opened and Sarah took three steps back.
"Who the hell are you?" Was his first reaction, his second was to blush.
He was face to face with a woman of a decent height. Her black hair wet and covered her right eye completely. Her strange aqua eye seemed to burn into Sarah's flesh, and lastly she was soaked and wore a simple white towel. Of course this was the disgruntled assassin Anghiari, but Sarah did not know that, and he was close to choking on his own tongue.
"I'd be the person who owns this apartment."
"Oh. May I... uh... come in. I need to speak with y-you or the man of the house."
She shrugged and waved the man in. With a thunk and a click the door locked behind him. Anghiari pointed to a "little boy" sitting by the table. "There's the man of the house, now if you don't mind, I'll go take a shower."
"Uh-huh." Sarah coughed and cleared his throat. In a fluid motion he took off his pack and walked over to Ahura Mazda who was acting like a ten-year-old and doing rather well. Then again anyone who wore flannel pajamas and was fiddling with paper on the floor could pull off "ten-year-old."
Sarah set the back next to the young man. "You must be Osiris...?" He hesitated, because he could have been in the wrong house after all.
The boy did not respond, so the confused Sarah decided it was best to look around. The apartment wasn't that unusual. It had simple decorations, unwashed dishes and a pink shag carpet. The man gave a sigh, this would work out.
There was another knock on the door, and an angry curse came from the bathroom as Anghiari stormed out. "What now? Jehovah witnesses?" She flung open the door to reveal a very stunned cop. "Yes?"
He stuttered, "D-d-does A-ahura Mazda live here?"
"He's my ten year old son." She pointed to Ahura and Sarah.
The cop blinked a few extra times. "Oh. We must have the wrong person. I'm sorry to have erm... interrupted ma'am." The cop tilted his hat and left.
There was a long awkward silence and Anghiari scurried to the window and watched a unmarked car pull away, as well as several people walking off. She gave a nod and head back into the shower.
Ahura Mazda coughed, "Thank Allah they're gone!"
"No kidding, I didn't think I could pull off the carpet for much longer." Sindiri stretched out and slithered over thief and scientist.
"Oh, so I DO have the right house." Sarah let out a big sigh as he fell onto his bum from his ever tense crouch.
"You actually thought you had the wrong address?" Ahura grinned as he himself stood and stretched. "Now, what the heck do I have to do to get rid of you, old man?"
"I am NOT old!"
"You're old enough to be my dad," Anghiari said as she slipped out of the bathroom fully dressed. "In fact, you are."
"How...No wait. I have to give you something!" He turned to Ahura and gave him the bag he had been carrying. "This is why I've come."
"Nothing's going to bite me when I open the bag?"
"Oh course not! What do you think I am?"
"A very cruel scientist who preformed unspeakable experiments on live subjects, and is capable of killing anyone in the blink of an eye. You're also an eccentric crazy loon. And would you trust someone who popped out of nowhere?" Ahura eyed the scientist with contempt.
"You've got me there.... You don't have to trust me. You just have to trust yourself." The scientist hesitated, "This means everything in the world to me."
The thief rolled his eyes. He could honestly care less, but if it would make this guy go quietly, he would do it.
Ahura blinked. "A giant green yellow spotted egg."
"It's a dragon egg."
"Okay, so I now know you're taking crack for sure. What the hell is it, really?"
Sarah could have banged his head against the wall, but he thought better of it. "It's a dragon egg. You really are dense."
Ow. Ego popped. "If I was dense I would NOT be standing here a free man."
Haha. Checkmate.
"Just... trust me on the dragon egg part, if you do anything stupid you'll regret it." The middle aged man nodded to Anghiari and Sindiri, "If you two ladies don't mind I'll be taking my leave, and please don't let him do anything to the Bishen Dragon egg. Please."
The ladies nodded and watched the scientist walk of the door, hopefully never to return. Anghiari turned to Ahura the instant the door shut behind her "father." "We have to get out of he--what are you doing?"
He was taking the egg out of its protective backpack and preparing kitchen utensils to make an omelet. "Herm? What did you say?"
"Don't make me hurt you."
"What?! I'm hungry! Is that a crime?"
The assassin shook her head slowly, "No, but everything else you do is. Now get your butt in gear, put that egg back in the pack and let's get moving."
"Don't tell me you seriously think the egg is really a dragon egg..." Ahura trailed off. Maybe this really was a dragon egg.
The egg gave him a mental kick in the back of the head. He winced in pain and whimpered "Ow."
"What's wrong now?" Gi had decided to get her own gear ready, while the flightily thief contemplated. She really should have killed him back there.
"The egg kicked me!"
She shook her head. No, she was not going to ask about this one. It was strange enough. Curiosity could eat itself. "Just get packed, we have the hurry, and Sindiri, I think you may have to come with us."
"All ready on it!" The data translator called back to her.
Sometimes Anghiari wondered why she had chosen to stick with the thief. She knew perfectly well that it was not because he was attractive, or because he needed someone with common sense, and it was not about money. So why did she stay?
"I'm ready, and so is Sin. Where should we go?"
Contemplation would have to wait. "I've never been to Egypt before."
"Oh? Well, It's not that spectacular, but it's a start, and I have been meaning to do a job for a friend."
"Start for what and what friend?"
The red eyed thief gave her a smile. "You'll see when we get there."
