Mermaids and Mermen
Usually mermaids do not cross breed, because of the unusual hybrids that occur. It's a generally taboo practice to "breed" hybrids, like Sibylle. It is rumor that none of the mer-subspecies are extinct, but this has yet to be proven true.
Freshwater ( image )- The stereotypical mermaid with long flowing hair, pale skin, and half fish. Well, not all of them are pale and long haired, but you get the idea. Think "little mermaid." They live in any kind of fresh water.
Saltwater ( image ) - They are closer to fish than human. They have the bottom half of a fish, gills, no hair, and a long back fin. Females do have breasts, and they normally have stubbier back fins than males. They are ocean dwellers.
Water Phoenix ( image )- These are a rather strange species that has been officially classified as extinct. They have the top half of a human, ears that are similar to feathers, wing like back fins made of plasma or another form of energy. The bottom half is made of the same substance as the wings, and normally has a ghostly jelly fish appearance, but is not truly see through. They live in salt water or freshwater.
Salamander ( image ) - Yes, they were classified as a type of mermaid in this realm. They have also been dubbed extinct by the residents of this realm. They live in bog like areas most of the time, or the tropics. Their body make up is similar to that of a human, having legs and arms, and a head in the proper places. They have a long tail that can regenerate if needed. Their hands and toes are webbed, and lastly, they can see in the dark and murky waters.
Diamond ( image ) - These merpeople are also dubbed as extinct. They look very similar to humans except for their gills, and webbed fingers and feet. They come in various shades dubbed "normal" by humans. They are land and water dwellers. In the last war against the humans most of them were put to death by various means.

Humans
Humans will always be just that. They tend to be inclined to architecture and other silly useless things. War being one of them. They often wage war on neighboring communities for no real reason. The common people are content with their lives and would rather leave the magically creatures alone.
Humans are often magically inclined towards fire. They often stick with technology instead of magic.

Elves
Elves normally stay near forests and their complexes, and would very much prefer to be left alone by the rest of the world.
Base - When you think elf you think this. They have fair skin, point ears, and are tree huggers. Their skills vary, and well as their specialties, from clan to clan.
Drow - Your typical dark elf and user of black magic. They are not all "evil" they just prefer to look on the darker side of nature.

Half Breeds
(also called Halflings, and Hybrids)
Anthromorphs - Half human half animal of any sort. They often take the appearance of an animal that is usual a quadruped (but they're almost always a biped ) like Zephyrine is part tiger and part human.
Half Elves - They often, if not always, take the side of magical creatures rather than humans. They have a gift for magic relating to balance. ( White vs Dark etc. )
Naga - The top half of a human and the bottom half of a serpent. They're generally well mannered creatures, and have a gift for magic. They're classified as half breeds because of their scarce numbers. They used to have subspecies like the mermaids, but were driven to near extinction much sooner, and most of the types have interbreed leaving one mismatched type.
