Pallid Waters
Prologue

War is a natural occurrence between the human race, the elfin races, the avian races and all the other races known to man. There is no race in history that has not fought in a single war. The race of merpeople is no exception to the rule.

There were originally five subspecies of merpeople, but thanks to various bitter feuds, various wars between the species, and the natural decline due to human increase in population.

Now, there are two. Freshwater and Saltwater. However, there were a few "leftovers" from the extinct subspecies. Some of them were smart enough to breed into other mer lines. Such as a very wise lord, who had cross bred with a freshwater. A generation or two later the traits made themselves apparent.

Which leads us to the birth of Sibylle, a mermaid who was meant to be a everyday freshwater mermaid found in your average magical lake. The the surprise of her parents, one of noble birth the other of plebian, they found their child had traits of a salamander, and also the traits of a water "phoenix." This was a very unusual combination to say the least. No one was thrilled by this little girl.

Shortly after the birth another war broke out. This one, however, was between the humans and the mer from both species. It was a rather pointless battle, having the merpeople outnumbered by twenty the one, the humans slaughtered them.

The mermaids and mermen were scattered throughout the lands, only connected by rivers and other means. Sibylle was left without parents, and was raised by strangers.

Seventeen long years of prosecution for being the only one of her kind. Seventeen years of constant insults from those who where dubbed "normal" by the humans and other outside creatures. Seventeen long years of pure hatred.

And yet Sibylle still remained kind. She remained civil after all of this, and she had even acquired a few close friends. It was her twentieth year, and she had decided to leave her "home" and search for something new.

We all know nothing every goes as planed. These pallid waters are no exception to the rule.

Curious yet? No? Well, you will be. This is the story of a very unusual hybrid mermaid that was inspired by Quis. If you don't know who Quis is she owns several Bishen dragons, and I don't want to give out her email, so the link leads to one of her pages.
